Songs From My Heart

I left Baylor University at the end of my sophomore year and spent the next five years ‘on the road’ with a group of five that I co-founded.  It was called “Tomorrow’s Sunshine”.  I played bass and, occasionally,  guitar.   I was the alto/tenor and comic relief.  We sang “Fifth Dimension,” “Carpenters,” “Three Dog Night”,  and anything that had great harmony.  We even covered the Osmonds.  Not only did we sing and play, we danced.  Patrick Swayze’s sister, Vicki, was our choreographer.

We spent seven months on a USO tour to Alaska and the Far East, after which we played the Flamingo Hilton in Las Vegas and the Diplomat in Miami,  to name just a few.   In between, we played at the Astrodome, the Irving  State Fair and the grand opening of the Dallas Fort Worth Airport.  Some performances were on great big stages with fantastic lighting and some on one foot platforms with screw in spotlights.

Disneyworld was my favorite.  We performed at Tomorrowland Terrace in the Magic Kingdom, where the stage came up out of the floor.  Sometimes every seat was filled.  Sometimes, the guy wiping the table looked up and smiled--he was the only one in the audience.  Yes, indeed,  I loved every minute of it.

I left the group in 1974 and returned to college, fulfilling a promise I had made to my dad.  I finished my BA in Houston and then my Master’s at Baylor University in Waco.

It wasn’t until I moved to Dallas in the mid 1980’s that I really started writing songs--one after another.  I worked in the theatre but wrote music in my spare time.  I performed at local churches and writer’s nights. I won second place in Mesquite Folk Festival and  had an evening at “The White Elephant” in Fort Worth-- which was ‘just me.’  It was terrifying, but I did it.  A year later, I played the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville several times and was asked back to fill in on occasion.  Those were the days!

Although they have been performed on various stages and for different types of audiences, the songs I would like to share have never been published (with the exception of "Dallas Does It.")  All are copyrighted and registered with ASCAP.   Two were played on the radio as part of KLUV's Dallas Songwriting Contest.  (I won second place.)

It is my hope that the digital format will carry the message and spark the interest of a  budding young recording artist  who can take them to a larger audience.  For me, it is the message that's in the music.  I don't think the message ever grows old.  Keep on dreaming and help somebody else along the way.

God bless,
